CAPTURING AMERICAN HISTORY THROUGH AUGMENTED REALITY
How do you capture one of the pivotal moments in American history in a way that is both accurate and engaging for the audience? How do you respectfully tell a story about the assassination attempt of John F Kennedy (JFK) in a way that doesn’t turn people away? How can you share this story in a way with the digital generations to better understand this moment?
Colin McGrady reached out to our team to try to solve their challenge.
They specifically were looking for a way to connect with audiences utilizing mobile phones and increasing the immersion of the end user.
To our team, an augmented reality mobile application made perfect sense. It was accessible, allowed us to build the necessary models, and focused users' attention on specific aspects of the story we were telling.
We began by gathering extensive information about the JFK assassination to ensure historical accuracy. This involved consulting with historians, reviewing archival footage, and collecting photographs and documents from the era.
With our research complete, we developed a creative brief to align the team and stakeholders on the project's MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and extended goals. This brief outlined the project’s vision, objectives, and key deliverables.
We chose Unity as the development platform due to its robust AR capabilities and flexibility in handling 3D models and animations. Unity also provided the tools needed for cross-platform development, ensuring our application would be accessible on both iOS and Android devices.
Next, we created a detailed sitemap to plan the structure and navigation of the application. Our goal was to design an intuitive user flow that prioritized ease of use. This involved identifying key features, such as the motorcade re-creation, guided tour, and AR photo opportunities, and mapping out how users would interact with these elements.
In parallel with the sitemap planning, our design team began working on the look and feel of the application. This stage included creating wireframes for each screen, focusing on usability and aesthetic appeal. We aimed to design a user interface that was visually engaging and easy to navigate.
Our 3D artists and animators began developing the detailed models and animations for the AR motorcade. This included creating lifelike representations of the vehicles, buildings, and other key elements of Dealey Plaza. Attention to detail was crucial to ensure an authentic and immersive experience.
With the design and 3D assets in place, our development team started building the application in Unity. This involved integrating the AR functionality, implementing the guided tour, and ensuring smooth transitions between different sections of the app. We also incorporated data archives and audio tour components to provide a rich, educational experience.
Throughout the development process, we conducted extensive testing to identify and fix any bugs or issues. This included usability testing with a select group of users to gather feedback and make improvements. Our goal was to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for all users.
Using Unity, we built a mobile application with a seamless user experience. Our design team created an intuitive interface, and we tested the app extensively to provide a great experience to users of all demographics.
